I plan on going to medical school. My mother wants me to become a pediatrician or a surgeon, but I have other interests. I want to become a Diagnostic Radiologist(Interventional) specializing in breast and gynecological imaging. I hope to someday start a women’s cancer center and work to not only treat cancer but to find a new method of detecting cancer earlier in women.
My mom says that my dreams are too far-fetched and I should be more practical. I think she believes that I won’t be able to achieve this or that my center will fail. She also said that no one would go to a black-owned cancer center because a lot of “people” don’t believe that blacks are qualified physicians. She said that some people believe that our achievements should be chalked up to affirmative action and that we were just handed a medical degree without actually doing the work. I know that she means well, but her comments are a little discouraging.
Do you think that my goals are set too high? Should I play it safe? And how impossible do you think this will be?
No, of course it’s not too far-fetched! I’d encourage you to follow your dreams, you never know what’s possible! It’s happened enough times, people thinking they could never do things, but then later living their dreams. Don’t let other people’s negative thoughts bring you down.
I dont think your goals are too high, but doesn’t places like this already exist? Perhaps you could look into working at one of these places.
Thats really funny that she says no one would go b/c you’re black.
Has she watched TV in the last year or so? News FLASH, our PRESIDENT is now BLACK!
